A city in Oregon is changing the daily commute to school through its weekly “Bike Bus” initiative. Every Wednesday, kids and parents in Portland swap their cars and school buses for bikes. This fun method of commuting is known as the “Bike Bus,” first organized in 2022 by Alameda Elementary School PE teacher Sam Balto.

The Bike Bus operates similarly to a school bus, with designated pick-up and drop-off spots. Children can ride independently, with friends, or accompanied by their parents.

In addition to supporting children’s health and fitness, this initiative also removes cars from the streets during the school run, lowering pollution and traffic. The Bike Bus initiative has become so popular that even pop legend Justin Timberlake showed up last month to support the young cyclists.

However, Mr Timberlake isn’t the only one joining the fun.

Biky Bikes co-founders Danil Kontsevoy and Stanislav Reginsky dusted off their bikes to experience the movement firsthand. After launching their kid-friendly bike models over a year ago, the two entrepreneurs were excited about supporting an initiative encouraging children to cycle.

The founders were thoroughly impressed, with Danil noting, “Cycling isn’t just about transportation. It’s about childhood freedom, confidence, and adventure. Seeing the Bike Bus in action was incredibly inspiring. The excitement on the kids’ faces and the sense of community is exactly what cycling should be about.”

Stanislav added, “The Bike Bus proves that children enthusiastically embrace cycling when they have lightweight, easy-to-ride, and safe bikes. That’s what drives our design philosophy at Biky Bikes.”

Choosing the Right Bike for Your Child: Essential Tips from the Founders of Biky Bikes

It is essential to choose a safe and comfortable bike for your children to encourage more participation in cycling initiatives like the Portland Bike Bus.

To help parents make the right decision, the founders of BikyBikes.com have compiled a list of key points to consider that they also incorporate into their designs:

  1. Lightweight frame: The ideal bikes for kids should be lightweight, ideally around 10-14 pounds, making it easier for kids to pedal during longer rides.
  1. Hand brakes instead of coaster brakes: Specialized children’s bikes, like the Biky Bikes for kids, swap coaster breaks for hand brakes. This feature offers better control, allowing children to slow down and stop safely.
  1. Grips: Child-friendly grips tailored to their small and sensitive hands are a must, helping them be comfortable and easy to hold.
  1. Lower saddle height: A well-designed bike helps with easy mounting and lets kids place their feet on the ground quickly, helping them get off to a good start.
  1. Steering limiter: A crucial safety feature that prevents children from making sharp turns, providing an accident-free riding experience.
  1. No training wheels: While they are standard, they can hinder progress. It’s better to invest in a kid-friendly bike without training wheels, which will allow children to gain confidence in riding independently.
  1. Designed specifically for kids: Many brands shrink adult bike models, but the ideal bikes for kids should be designed with their unique proportions and needs in mind.

On Your Bike!

Children’s cycling initiatives, like the Portland Bike Bus, are growing in popularity. This eco-friendly and healthy trend makes it more critical than ever for parents to choose the right bike for their little ones.

Companies like BikyBikes.com make choosing and ordering a lightweight child’s bike significantly more accessible and affordable, helping parents and guardians nationwide support their children in their cycling journeys.
