The Office reboot unlikely to happen today

The Office (the American version) is a popular comedy series that has significantly impacted today’s pop culture.

Many viewers, past and present, have consistently hailed The Office as one of the best comedies ever to air.

However, Mindy Kaling, a consistent show member for more than eight seasons, thinks many of its characters would be “canceled” if they made it today.

The news

Mindy Kaling is best known as Kelly Kapoor of the Dunder Mifflin Scranton Branch.

The actress has had roles in front of and behind the camera, as well as writing, executive producing and directing.

Kaling recently appeared on Good Morning America when asked about a reunion or the possibility of a reboot.

Although she really enjoyed her time at The Office, the actress admitted she didn’t think it would happen.

“That show is so inappropriate now,” said Kaling.

Mindy Kaling echoed the sentiments of many who understand that times have changed.

She explained that people’s attitudes are different now since The Office first aired in 2005.

“The writers who I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn’t make now,” Kaling elaborated.

“Tastes have changed, and honestly what offends people has changed so much now.”

“I think that actually is one of the reasons the show is popular, because people feel like there’s something kind of fearless about it or taboo that it talks about on the show.”

Other thoughts

The Kelly Kapoor actress was also asked what she thinks a modern version of her character in The Office would do.

“I think she would have quit Dunder Mifflin to become an influencer, and then probably be canceled, almost immediately,” Kaling replied.

“Actually, most of the characters on that show would be canceled by now.”

Steve Carell

Mindy Kaling wasn’t the only former Dunder Mifflin actor to dismiss reunion talks.

Steve Carell, who has become synonymous with the eccentric Michael Scott, opted not to return to the role.

In 2018, Carell spoke to Collider and shared his thoughts on the popularity of The Office.

“The show is way more popular now than when it was on the air,” he said.

“I just can’t see it being the same thing, and I think most folks would want it to be the same thing, but it wouldn’t be.”

“Ultimately, I think it’s maybe best to leave well enough alone and just let it exist as what it was,” added Steve Carrell.

However, The Office alumni still had a soft spot, saying:

“So, no. But I love the show. It was the most exciting time, and all of those people are my friends.”

“We all love it. It was a special thing. It was a special thing before it was a special thing. It was special to us, before other people started feeling that way. But, no.”
