Amazon just unveiled a new business model and also runs an online pharmacy.
Amazon Pharmacy
Customers can order over-the-counter and prescription medications from Amazon Pharmacy using the company’s website or mobile application.
Customers get access to their order history, the option to set up periodic refills, and discounts and savings with either their insurance or Amazon Prime membership.
They can pick up their medications at a nearby drugstore or have them delivered to their residence.
However, Amazon Pharmacy is only available to US citizens.
RxPass, a new prescription service for Prime members, was announced on Tuesday.
The perk
The latest member to Amazon Pharmacy is designed to increase subscriptions and users.
50 generic pharmaceuticals that treat more than 80 common chronic diseases are available to RxPass members in as many doses as they require.
These meds include:
- High blood pressure
- Anxiety
- Diabetes
The RxPass only costs $5 per month to use, and since delivery is free, there are no delivery expenses to be concerned about.
Venture into health care
Amazon has been trying to establish a reputation for itself in the healthcare industry for years.
The e-commerce behemoth started Amazon Pharmacy during the first year of the Covid-19 outbreak, which offered medication at more affordable prices.
Amazon purchased PillPack in 2018, an online pharmacy that specialized in sending clients presorted medicines in convenient packages.
As a result, Amazon Pharmacy was created.
With the help of this takeover, Amazon was able to increase the size of its client base and provide a more specialized service in the market for the distribution of pharmaceutical drugs.
Amazon Care was the result of the company’s debut into the healthcare industry, albeit it was eventually scrapped.

Amazon Care offered virtual primary care, follow-up care, drug delivery, and video consultations with medical professionals for staff members of partner companies.
By July 2022, Amazon had changed its direction and had acquired upscale primary care provider One Medical.
One Medical operated a network of walk-in clinics and online treatment alternatives to deliver healthcare through telemedicine and primary care.
They provided the following:
- Telemedicine consultations
- Home medication delivery
- Same-day visits
- Online scheduling
- 24/7 virtual care.
One Medical aimed to improve primary care accessibility, convenience, and personalization for patients.
RxPass is one of the services offered by amazon.
Customers who use the Prime Prescription Savings Benefit can save up to 80% on the price of generic medications.
When utilizing medications from reputable brands, it rises to 40%.
Subscription program & layoffs
Andy Jassy, the CEO of the largest e-commerce firm in the world, is committed to reducing costs while growing the Prime membership program.
For a small monthly fee, Amazon Prime members get access to a variety of advantages and services, such as:
- Free two-day shipping on eligible items
- Streaming of movies, TV shows, and music
- Access to a rotating selection of e-books, magazines and other content
Additionally, Prime members get access to exclusive offers and discounted rates on a range of items.
Furthermore, the service offers free release-date delivery on qualified pre-order items as well as free same-day or one-day shipping on qualifying items to a limited number of urban areas.
Meanwhile, the company plans to terminate other projects, freeze corporate jobs, and fire roughly 18,000 people.
Jassy reaffirmed Amazon’s commitment to concentrate on long-term possibilities, such as the healthcare industry.
Pharmaceutical competition
Amazon faces intense competition from well-known retailers like CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart in the pharmaceutical sector.
Since its founding, the business has not yet produced a status report on its attempts to establish an online pharmacy.
Business Insider reports that a Morgan Stanley research conducted in August found that Prime subscribers did not rank Amazon Pharmacy as one of their most valuable services.
Vin Gupta, Amazon’s chief medical officer, claims that the company is committed to providing a different pharmacy experience in contrast to other retailers.
“This is still day one for us when we’re at our beginning stages here, but we recognize that change is needed,” said Gupta.
“That’s what patients across the country are telling us, and that’s what Amazon is responding to.”
RxPass does not currently provide insulin or other specialty drugs, and it is not accessible to Medicaid or Medicare recipients.
Vin Gupta also didn’t say whether Amazon will soon increase the number of prescription drugs it supplies through RxPass.
Over 150 million individuals, according to Gupta, are utilizing at least one of the prescription drugs made available by RxPass.
