NYPD Deputy Chief Louis Deceglie told reporters that around 7:30 pm, police responded to a call about an emotionally disturbed person.
New York police arrested a woman and took her to the hospital by ambulance.
According to an NYPD statement, the woman was brought in for an examination.
Meanwhile, city records show the apartment building where the victims were found is listed as a family shelter.
Deceglie said officers responded to the initial call.
Additionally, a family friend told police officers that the children were cared for by their father.
Police received a second emergency call half an hour later.
“A second 911 call was received reporting to unresponsive babies not breathing at the same location,” said Deceglie.
“Patrol officers returned to the apartment, where they found an 11-month-old baby boy and a 3-year-old male unresponsive with stab wounds, multiple stab wounds.”
Although they were asked about the timeline of the 911 calls and how officers responded, police declined to comment.
