Salman Rushdie

Rushdie is a 75-year-old writer who has received constant death threats for his novel, The Satanic Verses.

The novel was considered blasphemous by Muslims and prompted the author to go into hiding for nearly a decade after its publication in 1988.

Rushdie was stabbed on Friday morning and was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Hadi Matar, 24, allegedly stabbed Rushdie at least ten times and punched him in the face, neck and stomach. Matar was charged with assault and pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.

He was held in custody without bail.
