Field Hockey Continues to Fly Under the Radar in Portland

Field Hockey Continues to Fly Under the Radar in Portland

Field hockey, while widely celebrated in parts of Europe, Asia, and Oceania, remains a niche sport in the United States. In Portland, Oregon, this dynamic and skillful game struggles to gain mainstream recognition. A combination of cultural preferences, limited resources, and fierce competition with other sports has kept field

Professional basketball player Damian Lillard has been playing for the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 11 years and has noticed how much the league has changed since he began. He expressed dissatisfaction with the NBA’s current state and how it differs from when he first drafted his athletic career.

Why Are Younger Players Becoming More Entitled?

Former American professional basketball player and now podcaster and sports analyst Jonathan Clay “JJ” Redick stated in his “Old Man And The 3” podcast that young players in the NBA have a sense of entitlement.

They don’t have the same leadership from veterans as when they first drafted their athletic careers. He believes the league immediately hands them the reins of their teams without learning the necessary skills to be successful players.

What Was Lillard’s Experience in Basketball Training?

When Damian Lillard first entered the NBA, the league was full of veteran players like Jason Kidd, Grant Hill, Kurt Thomas, and Kenyon Martin. Lillard learned valuable lessons from Mo Williams, Earl Watson, and Jared Jeffries, who were all in their forties when Lillard played with them.

He explained that this experience taught him to earn the team’s respect and not expect others to give it to him because of his draft pick. Nowadays, the league lacks a veteran presence, and the higher-ups provide the most talented players the keys to the franchise without earning them.

Lillard further noted that the NBA is much different from when he first entered the league. The lack of a veteran presence didn’t teach younger players to earn their way through the company, making them think they’re already superstars when they create an All-Star team or receive a max contract. The professional basketball player also noted that younger athletes are just playing for themselves and their statistics, not for the team.

Why Does Damian Lillard Dislike the Ring Culture?

Lillard dislikes that the NBA is becoming focused on winning championships. He loves playing the game for the competition, camaraderie, and the satisfaction of his teammates achieving success. He believes that players must value the regular season rather than overshadowing it with the need to win a championship.

The NBA star further noted that while winning a championship is essential in a basketball career, he thinks that there’s so much more to the sport than that. Players must also appreciate the journey and experience. He’s also dismayed because the NBA isn’t doing enough to recognize that.

How and Why Is He Unbothered by Not Having a Title?

Damian Lillard has been an outstanding player since the professionals drafted him into the Trail Blazers in 2012. Despite his impressive achievements, he’s yet to win a championship. Lillard has stayed loyal to his Portland team when he could’ve gone to a team with a better chance of winning.

People have also constantly criticized the player for not having an impressive title and urged him to collaborate with famous players or become a more effective recruiter for Poland.

However, fame doesn’t affect him because he has a whole life outside of basketball. He spends time with his children, visits his mom’s house, and spends time with his cousins. He also talks to his grandmother and has long conversations with his uncle to keep him grounded because his life doesn’t revolve around his role as an NBA player.
