How Can Testers Collaborate and Communicate with AI and ML Developers and Stakeholders?

Image Commercially Licensed from: Unsplash

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) transform software development and testing. As these technologies become more prevalent, testers must adapt how they work with AI/ML developers and stakeholders. Effective collaboration, communication, and automation testing ensure that AI/ML systems are thoroughly and adequately tested.

This article will discuss how testers can collaborate and communicate with AI and ML developers and stakeholders.

Understand the basics

Start by understanding that AI and ML rely on data – and lots of it – to detect meaningful patterns that can then guide automated decisions and predictions.

Developers train machine learning models on large datasets, providing many examples that enable an algorithm to learn how to map different inputs to desired outputs over time. Testing data is used to validate the models are working as expected before being put into production.

It’s also crucial to know that while AI promises business value via insights and automation, the technology has blindspots. Machine learning models can perpetuate biases that exist in training data. They also lack human context and judgment, making explainability and transparency around AI decision-making crucial.

Defining Expectations for AI/ML Testing

Start by facilitating focused sessions with technical and business stakeholders to align on core objectives, requirements, and success criteria. Document these diligently. Seek to identify high-risk areas like security, fairness, safety, and unintended outcomes that require rigorous testing.

Define quantitative success metrics and thresholds for performance, accuracy, error rates, and other key parameters. Outline how models will be evaluated pre and post-deployment through cross-validation, A/B testing, and monitoring.

Develop clear processes for reporting issues found during testing, including severity levels and escalation protocols. Create feedback loops to capture insights that can rapidly improve models.

Choose the Right Tools

Testing machine learning systems necessitates an evolved toolkit for evaluating dynamic, data-fueled software that continues learning after deployment. Rather than testing static code logic, QA analysts must verify customized AI algorithms and models that extract insights from new data flowing through production systems.

While coding fluency isn’t essential, become conversant in popular ML programming frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras to understand how engineers build and iterate on neural networks.

In addition to open-source frameworks, leveraging a cloud-based test automation platform like LambdaTest can be extremely beneficial for testing ML applications. LambdaTest offers scale, speed, and advanced automation capabilities specifically designed for AI/ML testing needs

Adopting an Exploratory Mindset

Artificial intelligence and machine learning systems pose unique challenges for testing due to their non-deterministic and constantly evolving nature. Adopting an exploratory mindset is essential for testers to address AI/ML complexity.

With exploratory testing, testers take an investigative approach focused on learning versus pass/fail assessments. Exploratory testing emphasizes curiosity, creativity, and flexibility to uncover insights about a system’s capabilities and flaws.

For AI/ML, this means crafting dynamic test charters focused on high-risk areas versus pre-defined test cases. Rather than scripts, utilize checklists and heuristics to guide deep interactive sessions with models.

Collaborate with the AI/ML Developers

Testing machine learning systems requires a highly collaborative approach between QA and the engineers building the product. To be effective, testers should initiate open lines of communication and seek to comprehend both the human and technical parts of the systems being developed.

Start by asking developers plenty of questions – don’t assume all AI/ML application aspects will be intuitive or familiar. Request architects walk you through the data pipelines, model training processes, underlying algorithms, and how predictions are made.

As testing progresses, maintain an open line of communication to provide visibility and reassurance. Convey what tests you are running and their limitations in surface area and environments covered. Forewarn technology leaders that early results may reveal gaps between stakeholder expectations and current model capabilities.

Conclusion

Testing artificial intelligence and machine learning systems demands teamwork and constant communication between those building the technology and those tasked with assessing it.

By embracing a collaborative spirit and aligning on shared objectives, testers can maximize their positive impact and bolster the adoption of AI that users can trust.

Rather than be intimidated by the complexity, they should candidly talk with developers to demystify unfamiliar concepts. Equipped with basic literacy around data, algorithms, and training processes, they can design pragmatic test plans that evaluate real-world viability.

How do developers and product owners collaborate to define acceptance criteria for user stories?

Image Commercially Licensed from: Unsplash

User stories aim to describe what the user wants the application to do. It provides a high-level understanding of a feature from the end user’s perspective.

Whereas the acceptance criteria are essentially mobile app testing, an application must pass to demonstrate that it has met all the user requirements.

User stories describe the desired outcome; acceptance criteria outline the steps to achieve that outcome by offering a checklist ensuring the feature behaves as intended from an end-user perspective.

This article will explore how developers and product owners can collaborate to define acceptance criteria for user stories to drive their testing process.

What are the acceptance criteria?

Acceptance criteria are a set of several prerequisites and conditions to validate an application meets its requirements to be accepted by end users to consider a user story to be finished.

They aim to define a product’s expected behaviors, functionalities, and outcomes, but they do not delve into finding out the specific steps to achieve these outcomes or implement a specific functionality. This is because the purpose of acceptance criteria is to state the aim, not the solution.

What are user stories?

A user story is essential and the first step to excellent application development. It helps to clearly define what users want. This encourages collaboration among developers, testers, and stakeholders to work together and create an application that meets their needs and provides a more satisfying user experience.

Importance of acceptance criteria for user stories

The criteria reflect what the users want instead of what the developers think they want. More often, user stories can be vague and open to interpretation if not defined correctly. In that case, it is possible for functional requirements to match with user stories but not reflect their intent.

When should acceptance criteria be created?

Before the beginning of development, acceptance criteria must be created.  Their use marks the point of development where the user story is finished satisfactorily. Well-written acceptance criteria prevent unexpected results at the end of a development stage and help ensure that all stakeholders and users are satisfied with the final result.

Tips to collaborate and write user stories

Acceptance criteria are needed for a user story to be considered done and ready for testing.

Understanding the user story

In application development, understanding the users’ needs is crucial. Therefore, the first step in collaborating with developers and product owners on acceptance criteria is understanding the user story from an end-user perspective.

Defining the scope and boundaries

The next step in establishing smooth collaboration is to define the scope and boundaries of the user story. The most effective way to do this is by describing the main features, functions, processes, and interactions the user story covers.

Considering the definition of “done”

Another step to build collaboration with developers and product owners is to align the acceptance criteria with the definition of done (DoD). The DoD is a checklist that applies to all user stories and ensures they are consistent, complete, and ready for delivery.

Contributing to writing acceptance criteria

Usually, the product owner or product manager gets this responsibility because they better understand the users’ needs and hold the vision for the final product outcome to ensure that acceptance criteria are written from the end user’s perspective.

To streamline acceptance testing and accelerate the application release, running acceptance tests using best-automated tools compatible with the testing needs is essential.

LambdaTest is an AI-powered test orchestration and execution platform to run both manual and automated tests at scale and meet testing demands. Testers can use this platform to test their application’s performance under varying conditions, ensuring it meets end users’ expectations.

Conclusion

Acceptance criteria are an important aspect of every user story the team works on. It clearly defines the scope, desired result, and testing criteria functionalities the delivery team is working on.

A user story can only be interpreted when the acceptance criteria are defined, provide complete clarity on the expected outcomes, and allow both the users and the developer to sync with the functionality that a user story will provide.

How to Handle Dynamic Web Elements and Locators in the Page Object Model Framework?

Image commercially licensed from: Unsplash

Identifying the web elements using locators like ID, Name, XPath, or CSS from the HTML snippets seems straightforward.

But it isn’t always that simple. Sometimes, IDs and classes of web elements keep changing. Such elements are called Dynamic Web Elements. These are database-driven elements whose values refresh when the database updates.

This article will discuss how to handle dynamic web elements and locators in the page object model framework.

What is the Page Object Model (POM)?

The Page Object Model (POM) is a design pattern used in Selenium test automation to create an object repository for web elements.

POM encapsulates the web elements of each page in the application into separate “page object” classes. These classes act as repositories that contain the locators and methods for interacting with the UI components on that page.

The page object classes are typically stored under a separate package like “pages.” The test classes use the methods encapsulated in these page objects to interact with the application under test.

Why Page Object Model?

The below-mentioned points depict the need for a Page Object Model in Selenium.

  •       Page Object Model centralizes the element locators and access methods in one place, avoiding duplication.
  •       Without Page Objects, testers need to individually update every test script accessing that element if an element changes. With Page Objects, only the central Page Object definition requires updates to propagate to all tests.
  •       If elements change, only the single Page Object class needs alteration rather than potentially thousands of test case scripts. This simplification enables maintenance.
  •       If primary UI revamps occur, like relocating menu buttons without Page Objects, the effort to update affected tests is proportional to usage volume. However, Page Objects localize the required changes to just the Page Object mapping the impacted elements, minimizing overall update effort.

Handling Dynamic Web Elements in Selenium

There are many ways to handle dynamic web elements; here are some examples:

  1. Explicit Waits

Explicit waits are among the most common and practical methods for handling dynamic elements that take time to load or frequently change state.

  1. Fluent Waits

Fluent waits are an extension of explicit waits that provide further configurability and flexibility when dealing with dynamic elements. It allows setting variable polling intervals that adjust how often a check occurs.

  1. CSS Selectors and XPath

When website elements lack reliable or static IDs and attributes that Selenium can latch onto, CSS selectors and XPath expressions become invaluable for consistently locating the desired elements.

These advanced locator strategies have enough flexibility to model some of the dynamic aspects of web pages.

  1. Frames

Selenium provides browser frame management with commands like switchTo().frame() to lock onto a frame before querying nested elements within. The script clarifies where the focus lies at any moment rather than relying on the ambient state. This prevents confusion if underlying UI layers suddenly reload or redirect.

  1. Multi-Attribute Locators

When singular attributes like IDs or class names lose reliability on dynamic pages, multi-attribute locators help recover uniqueness by combining several changing attributes.

  1. Refreshing Page

Sometimes simplicity is best. When dynamic elements fail consistently despite best efforts, restarting the browser or navigating away from and back to the page can reset enough state to reload troublesome elements.

  1. Retrying Search

Like refreshing pages, retry loops take an external control approach to dynamically appearing elements; rather than fine-tuning internal locators, we wrap searches in repetition logic to cover uncertain emergence.

  1. Use Page Factory and Annotations

Page factory is a class provided by Selenium WebDriver that helps initialize web elements in Page Object Model (POM) classes using annotations.

Cloud-based testing platforms like LambdaTest can simplify handling dynamic elements in test automation. LambdaTest offers features like visual AI-based debugging and screenshot comparisons to instantly detect and debug discrepancies in dynamic UI components.

Conclusion

Dynamic web applications require test automation frameworks that accommodate frequent UI elements and locator changes. A well-structured Page Object Model provides a robust foundation to manage these evolving frontends.

Using LambdaTest’s online Selenium grid, tests can run against dynamic web pages loaded in the latest versions of all major browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Cross-browser testing helps catch inconsistencies in how dynamic content renders across different environments.

The Digital Shift and How Remote Work is Redefining Workplaces

Image commercially licensed from: Unsplash

The world of work is undergoing a seismic shift. The traditional office environment, with its nine-to-five schedule, is making way for a more flexible, digital-first approach. Remote work, once a rare perk, has become a key feature of modern business. This article explores the multifaceted landscape of remote work and how it’s shaping the future of workplaces. The transformation is profound and pervasive, from how we collaborate to the tools we use.

Redefining the Workspace

Gone are the days when a desk in an office was the default workspace. The rise of remote work has ushered in a new era where the ‘office’ can be anywhere – from a home study to a coffee shop or even a beach in Bali. This shift is not just about physical space; it’s about a mindset change. Companies are now recognizing that productivity isn’t tied to a specific location. This flexibility allows employees to create a work environment that suits their personal preferences and lifestyles, leading to increased job satisfaction and productivity.

Embracing Technological Tools and Platforms

The backbone of successful remote work is technology. From video conferencing tools to project management software, technology bridges the gap between dispersed teams. It ensures that collaboration and communication flow as smoothly as they would in a traditional office setting. Companies are investing in these technologies not only to facilitate remote work but also as part of their commitment to sustainable business practices. By reducing the need for physical office spaces and daily commutes, these digital tools are helping companies reduce their carbon footprint.

The Evolution of Team Dynamics and Collaboration

Remote work is changing the way teams interact and collaborate. Without the possibility of impromptu meetings or quick desk-side chats, teams are evolving new ways to work together effectively. This evolution has led to more structured and intentional communication. Regular video meetings, clear and concise email communication, and collaborative digital tools are becoming the norm. These changes are fostering a culture where every team member can contribute regardless of their location, ultimately leading to more diverse and inclusive workplaces.

The Rise of Remote Accounting Positions

Accounting, traditionally seen as an in-office job, is undergoing a significant transformation. Remote accounting positions are becoming increasingly common, reshaping the finance sector. This shift is driven by realizing that accounting tasks, from bookkeeping to financial analysis, can be effectively handled anywhere with secure internet access. Remote work in accounting not only offers flexibility for employees but also expands the talent pool for companies, allowing them to hire the best accountants regardless of geographic location.

The transition to remote accounting positions also aligns with the broader trend toward digital financial management. With cloud-based accounting software and encrypted data transmission, remote accountants can manage financial records, perform audits, and provide strategic financial planning with the same efficiency and security as they would in a traditional office. This shift is not just about adapting to the current work culture but is a strategic move toward creating more resilient and adaptable financial operations.

The Impact on Employee Well-being and Work-Life Balance

One of the most significant impacts of the shift to remote work is on team member well-being and work-life balance. Remote work offers employees flexibility to manage their professional responsibilities alongside personal commitments, leading to a better balance. It eliminates long commutes, giving employees more time for leisure, family, or personal projects. However, this new way of working also brings challenges. Maintaining a clear boundary between work and personal life can be difficult when both occur in the same space. Companies are therefore focusing on team member well-being programs and encouraging practices like setting clear work hours and taking regular breaks to ensure remote working doesn’t lead to burnout.

Preparing for a Hybrid Future

As we look to the future, it’s becoming clear that the workplace will likely be a hybrid of remote and in-office work. This model aims to combine the flexibility and autonomy of remote work with the collaboration and community aspects of traditional office work. Companies are experimenting with various configurations to find the balance that works best for their teams. This hybrid model requires a rethinking of management practices, communication strategies, and workspace designs. Leaders are learning to manage distributed teams effectively while employees are adapting to a more fluid work environment. The hybrid model promises to bring the best of both worlds, offering flexibility and a sense of community and is set to define the future of work.

The shift towards remote work and the rise of digital workplaces are not just temporary responses to recent global events but are part of a larger, ongoing transformation in the world of work. From the emergence of remote accounting positions to the focus on team member well-being, these changes are reshaping how we think about work, collaboration, and workplace culture. As we move forward, it’s clear that flexibility, technology, and adaptability will be the cornerstones of successful and resilient organizations.

The Food Truck Experience: LoCo Fish Co. on Bringing Quality Seafood to the Streets

Image commercially licensed from: Depositphotos

For the past few years, the Californian streets have been witnessing a culinary revolution, one that rolls on wheels and brings gourmet tastes right to the sidewalk. At the heart of this gastronomic uprising are food trucks, a trend that has skyrocketed in popularity across the United States, particularly along the West Coast.

The owners of LoCo Fish Co., a California-based food truck eatery known for its fresh-caught fare and fusion flavors, dive into the world of seafood food trucks in California, exploring how they’re redefining the dining landscape. Uniquely positioned to give first-hand insights, LoCo Fish Co. leaders explore not just the food itself but also the business acumen, the customer experience, and the unique challenges and triumphs of running a seafood truck.

The Lure of the Sea: Why Seafood Trucks are Booming in California

California, known for its sunny beaches and pristine waters, is a seafood lover’s paradise. The diverse offerings from the Pacific Ocean, including the famous Dungeness crab and coveted Pacific salmon, have given rise to a thriving seafood truck scene, delighting both locals and visitors. The food truck’s thriving success can be attributed to inherent flexibility and lower overhead costs.

“Food trucks have a unique ability to go where the crowd is, be it a bustling city center during lunch hour, a lively festival, or a serene beach at sunset,” says the owner of LoCo Fish Co. “This aspect is particularly advantageous in a state like California, where people are always on the move and outdoor activities are a way of life.”

Operations and Accessibility

The absence of high rent, the need for fewer staff, and reduced overall capital investment make it easier for aspiring chefs to enter the food industry through food trucks, fostering innovation in seafood recipes. Additionally, food trucks enhance accessibility by introducing seafood to those who may not frequent traditional seafood restaurants, offering gourmet experiences at more affordable prices.

Navigating the Tide: Challenges of Running a Seafood Truck

Seafood mobile kitchens, while providing a unique approach to serving oceanic delicacies, face challenges in maintaining seafood freshness, managing limited space, navigating regulations, and securing optimal locations. Food trucks must contend with smaller refrigeration units, needing careful stock management and frequent replenishment to ensure freshness.

Notes the owner of LoCo Fish Co., “There’s a delicate balance between carrying enough stock to meet customer demand and ensuring that seafood doesn’t languish unsold, compromising its freshness.”

Seafood handling in food trucks demands strict hygiene to prevent contamination in confined spaces. Innovative kitchen designs and multifunctional equipment are crucial for optimizing workflow and maintaining food quality.

Regulatory Hurdles: Navigating a Sea of Paperwork

Food trucks, like all food service businesses, must adhere to numerous health and safety regulations, particularly stringent for those handling perishable items such as seafood. Compliance involves a deep understanding of food safety protocols, regular health inspections, and consistent adherence to best practices in food handling. Moreover, each California city or county may have its own set of rules and permits for operating a food truck, adding complexity for newcomers to the food industry.

Location, Location, Location: The Quest for the Perfect Spot

In the seafood truck business, location is crucial, especially near the beach, for added ambiance. However, securing prime spots is competitive and costly. Mobility is an advantage, but operators must understand customer patterns and align with events and seasons. Running a seafood truck involves juggling freshness, limited space, regulations, and strategic parking.

Hook, Line, and Sinker: Attracting and Retaining Customers

A seafood truck’s success depends on more than just the kitchen—it’s about attracting customers, securing repeat visits, and navigating the digital landscape. Utilizing social media, engaging in local events, prioritizing customer experience, and building a strong brand are crucial for steady patronage. High-quality visuals of seafood dishes spark immediate cravings, with real-time location updates keeping customers informed.

“A seafood truck can leverage these platforms to showcase their mouth-watering dishes, announce their locations, and engage with their audience,” says the owner of LoCo Fish Co.

Customer Experience: More Than Just a Meal

Great seafood trucks go beyond tasty dishes; they prioritize an immersive customer experience. From the truck’s ambiance to friendly staff, swift service, and thoughtful details like eco-friendly packaging or suggested pairings, every element contributes to creating an enjoyable atmosphere. Ultimately, building a loyal customer base relies on these experiences, where patrons return not only for the food but for the enriching feelings associated with it.

Building a Brand: Beyond the Truck

A strong brand identity is essential for a seafood truck to stand out among competitors. Beyond a catchy name and vibrant design, it involves creating a compelling story that resonates with customers. This could be achieved through a focus on sustainable seafood, unique flavor fusions, or a cherished family recipe.

Looking ahead, seafood food trucks in California are well-poised for success, given the state’s focus on sustainability, a growing demand for diverse and high-quality food, and a culture that values innovation and mobility. These trucks are not just a trend; they symbolize the resilience and adaptability of the food industry, promising to continue serving delightful seafood experiences to an eager audience.

Asclepius Movement: Transforming Lives Through Health and Fitness with Anthony Finochio, RN

A remarkable force in the realm of health and fitness, Anthony Finochio stands as a beacon of hope for individuals struggling to build a healthier and stronger self. His multi-faceted approach to wellness incorporates his expertise as both a registered nurse and a personal trainer, offering a holistic perspective on health and wellness.

Before branching out into personal training, Finochio was a registered nurse for close to six years. He served in multiple hospitals and health systems across Pennsylvania and across the country, gaining a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the process. However, it was during the tumultuous height of the COVID-19 pandemic that Finochio saw firsthand how tragic the consequences of a failing healthcare system and ensuing chronic illness can be. This experience compelled him to take a stand to make a real difference. That’s where the Asclepius Movement emerged — a manifestation of his passion, knowledge, and dedication.

Named after the ancient Greek god of medicine, Asclepius Movement is Finochio’s personal endeavor into preventative healthcare. He smartly leverages his experience in nursing with his prowess in personal training to provide a comprehensive health and wellness package. Finochio aims to focus on primary prevention – empowering people to maintain and promote health instead of waiting for disease to set in and then managing it.

Finochio’s personal training journey started at LA Fitness, where he honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of physical fitness and wellness. Driven by his entrepreneurial spirit and vision for a healthier society, he stepped out to start his own business – FinochioFitness. But unlike many fitness centers, Finochio doesn’t just limit his support to the gym. He mentors his clients through life coaching, providing them with personalized meal plans, workout schedules, and support to navigate life’s ups and downs, ultimately steering them towards healthier choices and lifestyle habits.

His philosophy centers around empowering individuals to be the best versions of themselves, focusing on holistic well-being rather than mere physical fitness. Drawing from his experiences in conventional healthcare and his ongoing research, along with trial and error on himself, Finochio embodies a testament to the belief that a healthier you is indeed attainable. His evidence-based approach has been instrumental in his mission of empowering people to take control of their health.

Following his work can be just as inspiring as it is informative. You can find his thought leadership, health and fitness tips, interactive engagement, and insights into his everyday life on Instagram @anthonyfinochio. His website, asclepiusmovement.com, includes an array of useful information and resources on health and fitness, as well as details about his services.

Finochio is challenging the notion of what it means to be a personal trainer. He’s more than a fitness coach; he’s a wellness advocate, a mentor, and a guide. He aligns his teachings with the bio-individuality of each client, understanding that what works for one may not work for another. His unwavering commitment to a healthier world makes him stand out in a world reliant on quick fixes and immediate gratification.

To witness the work of Anthony Finochio is to see a passionate man advocating for a future where disease prevention precedes its cure. His comprehensive understanding of health and his practical, specially tailored strategies unleash vibrant transformations. He exists not just to get individuals into their best shape but to inculcate a fuller understanding of how health can be cooperatively cultivated – body, mind, and spirit.

With Finochio leading the charge in the prevention-first healthcare movement, the prospects for a healthier future for all are brighter and more within reach. It ultimately underscores the importance of our own role in ensuring our health – that we have the capacity, with the right guidance and knowledge, to prevent what can be prevented and that the journey to the best version of ourselves can, indeed, be a rewarding experience. With Anthony Finochio at our side, we have an unwavering ally in our journey towards optimum health and well-being.
