Portland Sees Digital Health Sector Expanding

The digital health sector in Portland is experiencing significant growth, driven by technological advancements, investor confidence, and a broader push for innovation in healthcare. As the healthcare landscape evolves, Portland has positioned itself as a key hub for digital health, attracting both local and national players. This article delves

This week, Hyundai and Kia lifted the veil on a  next-generation technology that promises to enhance the safety and stability of electric vehicle (EV) drivers during harsh winter weather. Drawing what seems to be inspiration from a James Bond flick, this innovation comes in the form of new wheels and tires armed with built-in snow chains, deployable and retractable at the mere push of a button.

This revolutionary tire technology uses shape memory alloy modules within the wheel to deploy snow chains from the tire itself, thus eliminating drivers’ often tedious and inconvenient need to install snow tires. Especially in snowy mountain terrains and regions with brutal winter conditions, this invention offers EV drivers a monumental increase in grip on icy and snow-blanketed roads.

Diving deeper into the details, the technology comprises a wheel and tire assembly laced with a sequence of grooves that house the shape memory alloy modules. When drivers press a button, it triggers an electric current, forcing out the snow chains. Upon a second push of the button, the electric current halts, enabling the chains to revert to their original position tucked in the tires.

Experts in the automotive industry are touting Hyundai and Kia’s innovative tire technology as a potential game-changer when it comes to snow tires. The ramifications could be substantial once these companies fully integrate this technology into their future EV models. Despite no specific year being cited regarding the rollout of this snow chain tech, according to an article in Auto Buyers Market, Joon Mo Park, the head of Hyundai’s advanced chassis development team, has assured that the automaker is set on incorporating it into their EVs as soon as possible.

This innovation, which will hopefully be introduced on Hyundai and Kia vehicles someday, reflects our commitment to turning advanced technologies into real-world solutions that benefit customers,” he said. “We will continue to develop technologies that enhance the safety and convenience of our vehicles and bring value to our customers.”

Though Hyundai and Kia are different entities, they share a unique relationship. Hyundai Motor Group holds a 33.8% stake in Kia Motors, enabling significant influence despite Kia operating independently – more akin to a cousin relationship rather than a parent-child one. Moreover, both companies share certain resources and technological expertise, including manufacturing platforms and Research and Development facilities, leading to certain similarities in their respective vehicles. Both brands chiefly focus on providing value-driven vehicles in the affordable segment. Consequently, their cars often compete with each other in several ways.

In light of these ties, the collaboration between Hyundai and Kia in developing this advanced tire technology exemplifies their shared commitment to continually enhancing the safety and convenience of their customers. This innovation will hopefully pave the way for offering EV drivers an enhanced driving experience, particularly in regions with heavy snowfall.

Notably, by eliminating the need for drivers to install snow tires manually, this technology also reinforces the autonomous characteristic of EVs, pushing the boundary of what’s possible in the automotive realm. The added grip provided by the snow chain-embedded tires can increase safety and ensure unimpeded mobility in snowy and icy conditions.

Moreover, the snow chain-integrated tires might also benefit future EVs in terms of improving their range. By improving traction and reducing wheel slippage, these tires could contribute to more efficient power utilization, subsequently increasing the vehicle’s range – a prized attribute in the expanding electric vehicle sector.
