Drawing what seems to be inspiration from a James Bond flick, this innovation comes in the form of new wheels and tires armed with built-in snow chains, deployable and retractable at the mere push of a button.

This revolutionary tire technology uses shape memory alloy modules within the wheel to deploy snow chains from the tire itself, thus eliminating drivers’ often tedious and inconvenient need to install snow tires. Especially in snowy mountain terrains and regions with brutal winter conditions, this invention offers EV drivers a monumental increase in grip on icy and snow-blanketed roads.

Diving deeper into the details, the technology comprises a wheel and tire assembly laced with a sequence of grooves that house the shape memory alloy modules. When drivers press a button, it triggers an electric current, forcing out the snow chains. Despite no specific year being cited regarding the rollout of this snow chain tech, according to an article in Auto Buyers Market, Joon Mo Park, the head of Hyundai’s advanced chassis development team, has assured that the automaker is set on incorporating it into their EVs as soon as possible.

This innovation, which will hopefully be introduced on Hyundai and Kia vehicles someday, reflects our commitment to turning advanced technologies into real-world solutions that benefit customers,” he said. “We will continue to develop technologies that enhance the safety and convenience of our vehicles and bring value to our customers.”

Though Hyundai and Kia are different entities, they share a unique relationship. Hyundai Motor Group holds a 33.8% stake in Kia Motors, enabling significant influence despite Kia operating independently – more akin to a cousin relationship rather than a parent-child one. Moreover, both companies share certain resources and technological expertise, including manufacturing platforms and Research and Development facilities, leading to certain similarities in their respective vehicles.
